TakeOn vs BuzzBID.

In short: they're built for different trades. BuzzBID is Windows takeoff and estimating software for drywall, framing, acoustical ceilings, plaster, EIFS and fireproofing contractors, with computer vision that measures walls and ceilings. TakeOn is browser-based takeoff and estimating for electrical and low-voltage contractors. Both take you from plans to a priced bid in one product, so pick the one built for your trade.

BuzzBID comes from the people who started this category: it says it was built by the team that created Quick Bid and On-Screen Takeoff. It's aimed squarely at interior finish contractors. Its ClickONCE computer vision picks up walls, ceiling tiles, door assemblies and trim in a click, and the quantities flow into an estimate with labor, material, equipment and subcontract costs. It runs on Windows 10 or 11, and a multi-user team connects to a central SQL Server.

TakeOn is aimed at a different estimator: the one counting fixtures and devices and measuring conduit and cable runs. Templates carry properties such as fixture type, mounting or circuit, so the bill of materials rolls up by them. Panel schedules are read into the takeoff, and homeruns route themselves to the panel. It runs in a browser on a Mac or a PC, and the same takeoff prices into a Bid Summary and a proposal PDF.

So this isn't a contest. A drywall estimator won't find wall types and ceiling grids in TakeOn, and an electrical estimator won't find panel schedules in BuzzBID. The table below says where each one stands.

Common questions

Questions about BuzzBID and TakeOn.

Can't find an answer? Email contact@takeonbid.com — we read every one.

  • What is BuzzBID?

BuzzBID is takeoff and estimating software for interior finish trades: commercial drywall, metal framing, acoustical ceilings, plaster, stucco, EIFS, fireproofing, insulation and painting. Its ClickONCE computer vision measures walls, ceilings and doors, and the quantities flow into an estimate in the same program. BuzzBID says it was built by the team that created Quick Bid and On-Screen Takeoff.

  • Is BuzzBID cloud-based?

No. BuzzBID's own technical requirements list Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit). A single user works from a database on the PC; a multi-user team connects to a central SQL Server database. BuzzBID also allows installing it on a hosted virtual Windows PC, such as Azure, Amazon or Workspot. TakeOn runs in a browser, with nothing installed.

  • Does BuzzBID run on a Mac?

Not with support. BuzzBID says it can be run through Parallels on a Mac, but that setup isn't supported: official support is limited to native Windows installations. TakeOn runs in a browser on a Mac: Safari, Chrome, Edge or Firefox.

  • BuzzBID vs On-Screen Takeoff: what's the difference?

On-Screen Takeoff is a general takeoff program for any trade, with pricing in a separate product, Quick Bid. BuzzBID puts takeoff and estimating in one program and builds it for wall-and-ceiling and finish trades. Both run on Windows. If you're an electrical or low-voltage estimator moving off OST, BuzzBID isn't aimed at your trade, and TakeOn is.

  • Is BuzzBID good for electrical estimating?

It isn't built for it. BuzzBID's trade list doesn't include electrical or low voltage, and its automation is aimed at walls, ceilings and doors. TakeOn is built for electrical and low-voltage work: templates with properties for fixture type, mounting or circuit, panel schedules captured into the takeoff, and homeruns auto-routed to a panel.

  • Which should I choose?

Choose by trade. If you estimate drywall, framing, ceilings, plaster or fireproofing, BuzzBID is built for your work and TakeOn isn't. If you estimate electrical or low-voltage work, TakeOn is, and it runs in a browser on a Mac or a PC.
